How to Create a Copywriting Portfolio as a Newbie Copywriter
Employers ask for samples, and you don’t have them. Here is the solution.
Building a copywriting portfolio as a beginner may seem daunting, especially when you’re just starting out.
But the truth is, creating a strong portfolio is a process, and it all begins with a few simple steps: learn the craft, practice, and improve as you go.
1. Learn the Craft
Before you can showcase your skills, you need to build them. Start by studying the fundamentals of copywriting — read books, watch tutorials, and analyze effective copy you come across. Learn the different types of copy (emails, sales pages, ads, etc.) and understand what makes them successful.
The more you absorb, the better your foundation will be.
2. Practice
Once you have a solid understanding of copywriting, it’s time to practice. Don’t worry if you don’t have clients right away — create sample pieces based on hypothetical projects. You can rewrite existing ads or write mock sales emails for fictional businesses. The goal is to apply what you’ve learned and develop your unique voice as a copywriter.
